Lights And Shadows 2009: Una's Best Student Artists Exhibit Work Through July

Best of Show - Face 008 - ShimabukuroFLORENCE, Ala. - The University of North Alabama Department of Art is hosting the Lights and Shadows 2009 Juried Art Exhibition now through July 31 in the University Art Gallery. The gallery, located on the second floor of the Visual Arts Building, is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The exhibit is free of charge.
The exhibition features the artwork of a select group of UNA students. Their pieces include paintings, photography, watercolors, drawings, mixed media, sculptures and ceramics. Twenty winning entries from about 100 entries were published in the 2009 Lights and Shadows literary magazine, a collaborative production between the UNA English and art students, sponsored by the university. The Best of Show, awarded to Makiko Shimabukuro, of Fujimino, Saitama, Japan, is an acrylic painting titled "face 008." Shimabukuro also won first place in the 2D category and second place in the 3D category. David Sercel, of Ethridge, Tenn., won first place in the photography category with his film photograph of Deep Creek Canyon, Colo. Daniel Evers, of Florence, won first place in the 3D category with an assemblage of color marker images titled "Mix Match." Jessica Grotjahn, of Moulton, won first place in the digital media category with her video called "The Cloning." Lights and Shadows has received numerous awards for collegiate publications, and the 2008 edition was awarded second place in the literary magazine category at the 2008 Southern Literary Festival.
