Michelle Eubanks, UNA, at meubanks@2fitfashion.com, 256-606-2033 or 256-765-4392 FLORENCE, AL - It's been more than 150 years since the University of North Alabama has had a presence in Colbert County, but, on Dec. 1, that's no longer the case. The University opened a multi-purpose center on 6th Street in Tuscumbia that will be primarily utilized by the College of Arts and Sciences, School of the Arts, and the Office of Advancement. "I am excited to, once again, have a physical UNA presence in Colbert County," said Tuscumbia Mayor Kerry "Bubba" Underwood. "It is historically significant for them to invest here for the first time since the LaGrange campus site burned down during the Civil War. I am thrilled to see their willingness to have a presence in downtown Tuscumbia and to create a legacy of success that will continue for many years." Throughout the past several months, the property, which had housed a hardware store, was renovated to include two designated offices, an art gallery space, classroom space, and a professional kitchen. There is the potential for the facility to house a box office as well as fan shop in the future. "UNA has an obligation to serve the entire Shoals community and the entire North Alabama region," said Dr. Ross Alexander, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. "This location bridges the gap between UNA and Colbert County and allows the University community and our students to experience a different sort of educational experience. I commend and thank Mayor Underwood for this important collaboration and partnership." As part of its debut, a small group toured the facility Tuesday evening in advance of the Tuscumbia Christmas parade. It will be occupied by UNA students, faculty, and staff beginning in January with the start of the Spring 2021 semester.
